PIPE BURSTING: REPAIR UNDERGROUND WATER PIPES WITHOUT HAVING TO DIG UP YOUR YARD
In the old days, when a water main or sewer line in Oceanside, CA, became damaged and needed to be repaired or replaced it was necessary to excavate the underground pipes. This could add thousands onto the costs of repairs. Nowadays, plumbers have the capabilities to repair and replace damaged underground without having to dig them out.
Pipe bursting is one such technique. The pipe bursting process involves breaking the existing pipe while simultaneously pulling in a new pipe to replace it. It is particularly useful for replacing old or damaged pipes that are difficult to access or located in areas where digging up the ground is impractical or disruptive.
THE PIPE BURSTING PROCESS
The process begins with the digging of an insertion pit located at the start of the pipeline to be replaced. A similar reception pit is dug at the other end of the pipeline. A conical-shaped bursting head is attached to the front of the new pipe.
A cable or rod is fed through the old pipe from the reception pit to the insertion pit and attached to the bursting head. This cable will be used to pull the bursting head through the old pipe.
As the bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, breaking it apart and pushing the fragments into the surrounding soil. The new pipe, which is attached to the bursting head, is simultaneously pulled into place. New pipes are typically made from durable materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which can withstand the stress of the bursting process and provide long-term reliability.
THE ADVANTAGES OF PIPE BURSTING
Pipe bursting provides many advantages:
- The process requires only small entry and exit pits, significantly reducing the amount of excavation and landscape disruption.
- It is often less expensive than traditional excavation methods.
- Faster installation compared to traditional methods.
- With little excavation and minimal ground disruption, pipe bursting is more environmentally friendly.
- Pipe bursting allows for upsizing the diameter of the existing pipe to increase capacity.
In some locations, pipe bursting can present challenges. Certain soil types, such as highly compacted or rocky soils, can make the process more difficult. The old pipe must be structurally intact enough to guide the bursting head. Care needs to be taken to avoid damaging other underground utilities located near the pipeline being replaced. This makes pipe bursting a job best left to professionals with the training and tools to do the job right.
