BANGING, GURGLING, AND RATTLING: WHAT THOSE NOISES YOUR PLUMBING IS MAKING MEANS
Is your home’s plumbing making odd sounds? Water pipes, drains, water heaters, and other plumbing fixtures can produce a variety of noises that may indicate underlying issues. In this post, the Oceanside plumbers at 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration are going to look at some of the funny noises your plumbing can make and reveal what they mean.
BANGING OR KNOCKING
Banging or knocking noises can occur when water flow is suddenly stopped or changed, causing a shockwave in the pipes. This phenomenon is often referred to as a “water hammer.”
What it means: “Water hammers” can indicate loose connections or pipes or high water pressure problems.
BUBBLING OR GURGLING
Bubbling or gurgling noises coming from a drain typically occur when there is an obstruction in the drain or vent pipe, causing air to get trapped.
What it means: You may have a partially clogged drain or blocked vent pipe.
POPPING OR CRACKLING (WATER HEATER)
The popping or crackling sounds coming from your water heater are being made by sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank causing water to become trapped and steam to form as it heats.
What it means: Your water heater needs to be flushed to remove sediment. Sediment buildup can reduce the heater’s efficiency and lifespan.
RATTLING
Rattling noises occur when pipes vibrate against walls or other surfaces.
What it means: The rattling is often caused by loose pipe brackets or straps, or excessive water pressure. Securing the pipes and checking pressure usually resolves this issue.
CHATTERING OR VIBRATING
Chattering or vibrating noises are caused by loose or worn-out washers or valves within faucets or appliances.
What it means: A valve or washer needs to be tightened or replaced.
DRIPPING
Dripping sounds are usually caused by a leak, often from a faucet, showerhead, or pipe.
What it means: Call a plumber. The sooner that leak is repaired the better your chances of avoiding costly water damage. Damage from even a minor water leak can include higher water bills, structural damage to your home’s walls, ceilings, and floors, water stains and other aesthetic damage, and loss of personal property.
RUNNING WATER
You’re hearing the sound of running water when no fixtures are on.
What it means: The sound of running water could mean a hidden leak, which can lead to significant water damage and increased water bills. Call a plumber.
