Some home plumbing repairs and renovations require the services of a professional plumber and can cost hundreds of dollars. Then there are other plumbing projects that almost any homeowner can tackle. Repairing and replacing a showerhead is one.

What is a Shower Head

The showerhead is a nozzle with several pinpoint holes in the head. It’s attached to the shower pipe coming out of the wall. Shower Heads help control and distribute the flow of water out of the shower, providing a wide angle spray of water that makes showering easier. Some shower heads allow you to adjust the type of spray and pressure of the water coming out of your shower. Others are detachable and connected to hoses, allowing persons with limited mobility to reach the lower extremities of their body.

Clogs in the tiny spray holes are one of the most common and annoying shower head problems. They can affect the flow and distribution of water. Not getting the full spray of water, water shooting in different directions, and leaks are common problems caused by clogged shower heads.

Clearing a Clogged Shower Head

Getting rid of these problems is simple. For the most part, these clogs are caused by accumulated sediments blocking the holes in the showerhead nozzle. All you need to unclog them is some vinegar, a toothbrush, and maybe a paper clip. (No, we didn’t pick this up from an episode of MacGuyver!)

First, fill a bowl big enough to hold your showerhead with vinegar. Disconnect the showerhead. It should just unscrew from the shower pipe. Place it in the bowl of vinegar. Let soak overnight.

In the morning, remove the showerhead from its vinegar path and rinse it off in the sink. The vinegar should have dissolved the sediments blocking the hole. Screw it back on and take a test run. If there’s still some blockage, run a toothbrush over the holes or straighten out a paper clip and poke it through the holes.

If you don’t want to remove the showerhead, you can place a bag of vinegar over the nozzle, securing it in place with a rubber band or zip tie. Remove in the morning and run the shower to clear away any residue.

Replacing a Shower Head

Over time, a showerhead can start to show signs of age. The sprinkler holes may start to split and crack; it can also start to leak where it’s connected to the shower pipe. On the other hand, you may be planning to renovate your bathroom and want a showerhead that matches the new decor.

You can find a replacement shower head by shopping on Amazon or Ebay, or you can purchase one by visiting your local Home Depot or Walmart. One thing you’ll notice is that there’s a wide variety of different shower heads to choose from. Do a little shopping around. You’re sure to find one that has the features you want at a price you can afford.

The new showerhead can be installed by simply unscrewing the old one and replacing it with the new one.
